Janet Biehl (1953–)

Janet Biehl lives in Burlington, Vermont. Since the mid-1980s she has been involved with the theory and politics of social ecology. She published Left Green Perspectives, and has written a range of articles on deep ecology, feminism, libertarian municipalism and fascism. Her books include Rethinking Ecofeminist Politics and The Politics of Social Ecology (on which a series of international conferences was based).

Murray Bookchin (1921–2006)

Murray Bookchin developed the concepts of social ecology and Communalism. Bookchin died July 30th, 2006, after a long and active life as revolutionary, being deeply involved in the labor movement, in the civil rights movement, in urban activism, and in Green politics. (Read an introduction to his work.) He was a significant social theorist on the Left throughout his life, and his many books include Post-Scarcity Anarchism, The Ecology of Freedom, From Urbanization to Cities, The Philosophy of Social Ecology, Re-enchanting Humanity and The Third Revolution. (See his bibliography.) Bookchin was a pioneer of the ecology movement, and he co-founded The Institute for Social Ecology in 1974. Every page of this Journal is dedicated to his loving memory.

Eirik Eiglad (1975–)

Eirik Eiglad lives in Hjartdal, Norway. Since 1992 he has been involved with the theory and politics of social ecology, as well as in neigborhood activism, anti-fascism and the libertarian Left movement. He was one of the founders of Democratic Alternative. He has edited several radical periodicals, has contributed with writings, translations and lectures. Eirik Eiglad is the editor of Communalism.

Sveinung Legard (1978–)

Sveinung Legard lives in Oslo, Norway. He was one of the founders of Democratic Alternative, and has been editor of its Norwegian journal, Direkte Demokrati. He studies sociology, and is active in today’s anti-capitalist movements.

Kjetil Simonsen (1981–)

Kjetil Simonsen is living in Oslo, and has been active in Demokratic Alternative since its inception. He has been the editor of the Norwegian journal Direkte Demokrati, active in grassroots politics, and has written numerous articles in Scandinavian.

Peter Staudenmaier (1965–)

Peter Staudenmaier lives in Madison, Wisconsin. He has been active in anarchist and ecological movements in Germany and the United States since the 1980s. He is associated with Rainbow Bookstore Cooperative and The Institute for Social Ecology (in Vermont). He writes and lectures on history, economics, and political theory (see a selected bibliography), and is coauthor, with Janet Biehl, of Ecofascism: Lessons from the German Experience.

Peter Zegers (1965–)

Peter Zegers lives in Amsterdam, Holland. He has been active in the anti-racist, anti-militarist and ecological movements in the Netherlands, Belgium and the Scandinavian countries. He earns his living as a bookseller and contributes sporadically to various left-wing, skeptical, and humanist magazines. (See his articles on the web.)
